Today, @USFWS is taking over our Instagram account, sharing beautiful sunsets from wildlife refuges across the country and highlighting some of their important work. For 112 years, the 562 refuges and 38 wetland management districts in the National #WildlifeRefuge System have provided vital habitats for thousands of wildlife species. #Sunset sets the sky ablaze at #Waubay National Wildlife Refuge in #SouthDakota. The refuge is located in the prairie pothole region, one of the largest and most important breeding areas for ducks and migratory birds in North America. Artist George Catlin described the area as a “blue and boundless ocean of prairie.” It also has abundant lakes, marshes and woodlands. Photo by Spencer Neuharth, USFWS.
