Blackwater National #WildlifeRefuge on #Maryland’s Eastern Shore basks in a #sunset’s warm glow. Nicknamed the “Everglades of the North” because of its great expanse of ecologically important tidal wetlands, #Blackwater Refuge is a sanctuary for birds navigating the Eastern Flyway, a major East Coast bird migration route. The National Wildlife Refuge System -- which turns 112 years old tomorrow -- not only helps with wildlife conservation, it also provides great recreation opportunities. With at least one wildlife refuge in every state, it’s no surprise that nearly 47 million people visit refuges every year to explore the great outdoors and marvel at wildlife. Photo by USFWS.
